What is aerothermal energy and how does it work?

If you would like to learn what aerothermal energy is, how it works, whether it is truly sustainable and efficient and what advantages and disadvantages it brings to HVAC systems, you have come to the right place. This is a revolutionary concept that aims to improve the efficiency of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and domestic hot water production systems.

At Inditer, we will explain what aerothermal energy is and how it works in very simple terms, the types and applications where you can find it, and a comparison with systems such as air conditioning.

A solution for a greener future

Today, it is essential to select HVAC systems that contribute to energy efficiency. As environmental awareness grows, aerothermal energy is emerging as a key solution in the transition to a more sustainable energy model.

This system harnesses energy from outdoor air to heat and cool spaces and produce domestic hot water, reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Aerothermal energy: what is it?

Aerothermal energy is a system that harnesses the thermal energy of the air to generate heating, cooling and domestic hot water using heat pumps and a refrigerant fluid.

Even at low temperatures, air contains usable energy. Thanks to this, for every kW of electricity consumed, the system can generate up to 5 kW of thermal energy.

How does aerothermal energy work?

The system is based on a closed circuit through which a refrigerant circulates. The compressor increases its pressure and temperature, while the expansion valve reduces both values to enable heat exchange.

This process provides heating in winter and cooling in summer, as well as transferring heat to the home’s water circuits.

Applications of aerothermal energy

Aerothermal energy can be used with radiators, underfloor heating, HVAC systems and domestic hot water production, and is especially efficient in low-temperature installations.

Types of aerothermal energy

Air-to-air aerothermal energy

It extracts energy from outdoor air to heat or cool indoor air, operating in a similar way to an air conditioning system, but with higher energy efficiency.

Water-to-air aerothermal energy

It transfers thermal energy to water, which is then distributed to radiators, underfloor heating or domestic hot water systems.

The importance of aerothermal energy for energy efficiency

  • It reduces electricity consumption and CO₂ emissions.
  • It can generate up to four times more thermal energy than it consumes.
  • It promotes responsible and sustainable use of energy resources.

Which is better: aerothermal energy or air conditioning?

Although both systems work in a similar way, aerothermal energy offers energy savings of between 30% and 50%, making it a more efficient and sustainable long-term alternative.

Advantages and disadvantages of aerothermal energy

Economic advantages

It reduces energy costs and bills, with a gradual return on investment thanks to the savings generated.

Environmental advantages

It is a renewable energy source that reduces environmental impact and pollutant emissions.

Maintenance advantages

It produces no waste or combustion, which simplifies cleaning and maintenance tasks.

Disadvantages

  • High initial investment.
  • Lower efficiency in extremely cold climates.
  • Need for visible outdoor units.
