Freon Cooling Systems

When discussing freon cooling systems, one must always keep in mind the presence of a heat transfer fluid that allows for the necessary heat exchange, achieving its objective of “generating cold” through various states of pressure and temperature. This substance is commonly referred to as a refrigerant or cooling fluid.

On this occasion, we will provide a general overview of fluorinated or halogenated gases for refrigeration installations. This refrigerant, hereinafter referred to as freon, is commonly used in numerous sectors and applications, such as the food sector (both industrial and commercial), as well as the domestic and automotive sectors, among others.

It is true that increasingly strict restrictions from international organizations have led to an evolution toward natural refrigerants (such as ammonia or CO2), as well as a profound regeneration of the halogenated refrigerants commonly used years ago.

Is there an ideal refrigerant valid for all applications?

Undoubtedly NO. There are many factors to consider, including the nature of the fluid, application, compatibility, costs, safety, etc.

Evolution of Freon in cooling systems

According to their chemical composition, the following halogenated refrigerants exist:

  • CFCs
    • Composed of chlorine and fluorine. Highly harmful to the ozone layer (due to the chlorine).
    • E.g.: R11
    • Currently Banned
  • HCFCs
    • Composed of chlorine, fluorine, and a hydrogen atom. Harmful to the ozone layer and contribute significantly to the greenhouse effect.
    • E.g.: R22
    • Banned since 2015
  • HFCs
    • They do not contain chlorine, so they do not affect the ozone layer (ODP = 0). They contribute to a lesser extent to global warming.
    • E.g.: R134a – R404a
    • Example of Global Warming Potential (GWP)
      • R134a (1300)
      • R404a (3943)
    • Currently subject to significant restrictions based on GWP.

Under equal conditions, those with the best ODP and GWP will be chosen in order to seek the lowest environmental impact. These increasingly restrictive limitations have led in recent years to the retrofitting of numerous installations, replacing the original refrigerant for which they were designed.

Is there a direct replacement – retrofit?

Each case must be studied individually, as complications can arise, especially with refrigerants that have glide. In certain cases, there is a drop in performance or incompatibility with some fundamental components (e.g., the compressor and its oil) or physical properties (operating pressure), efficiency, etc.
